The term ‘Thankful Village’ relates to a village which lost no men during The First World War, as all of those who left the village to serve their country returned home at the end of the conflict.
There are 53 parishes in England and Wales from which all serving personnel returned.
Harley was fortunate to have been one of those parishes. A total of 22 men from the village joined the armed services between 1914 and 1918 and all returned home safely.
In 2018, to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the war and to commemorate Harley as a ‘Thankful Village’, the parish commissioned two benches, designed by a local artist. One can be found in St Mary’s Church Yard and the other is situated in the grounds of the village hall.
